Overcoming Imposter Syndrome FOR PERFORMERS

Imposter Syndrome: Overcome it with Hypnotherapy

If you’re a performer, there’s a good chance you’ve felt it—that little voice inside your head that says, “I don’t belong here.” You might be about to step on stage, stand in front of the camera, or perform a piece of music, and suddenly, doubt creeps in. “I’m a fraud,” it whispers. “They’re all going to realise I’m not good enough.” This is the essence of imposter syndrome, and if you’re nodding along right now, know that you’re not alone.

In my experience working with hundreds of clients, performers from all walks of life—actors, dancers, singers, and musicians—struggle with imposter syndrome at some point in their careers. The truth is, even the most talented performers can feel like they’re faking it. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to stay that way.

As a hypnotherapist who specialises in working with performers, I’ve seen firsthand how hypnotherapy can help shift that nagging doubt, build unshakable confidence, and allow you to step fully into your talents. Let’s explore how hypnotherapy can help you silence that inner critic and truly own your place in the spotlight.

What Is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is a psychological pattern where individuals doubt their accomplishments and feel like a fraud, even when they have plenty of evidence proving their skills. Performers are especially prone to it because their work is so public and often tied to high expectations and external validation.

You might be thinking, “But I’ve been successful, I’ve trained for years, I’ve even had praise for my work. Why do I still feel this way?” It’s because imposter syndrome isn’t based on reality; it’s a story we tell ourselves. And the problem is, it’s a story that sticks—until we actively work to change it. Even famous people suffer with imposter syndrom. Just read my article ‘7 Celebs Who Used Hypnotherapy (and what for!)

Why Performers Are Prone to Imposter Syndrome

What I’ve seen in working with performers is that the pressure to always be “on” can make even the most accomplished artist question their worth. Every audition, every performance, and every review can feel like your entire career is on the line. And when you’re constantly comparing yourself to others (hello, social media!), it’s easy to think, “Everyone else has it together. I’m just getting lucky.”

I once worked with an incredibly talented actor called Sarah, who had been cast in several major roles on Broadway. On the outside, she looked like she was thriving. But Sarah came to me because every time she landed a new role, she would panic. “I’m going to blow it,” she’d tell herself, “The director made a mistake hiring me.”

Sarah’s imposter syndrome was holding her back from fully enjoying her success. She couldn’t shake the feeling that, at any moment, the people around her would realise she wasn’t actually talented. Sound familiar?

How Hypnotherapy Helps Break the Cycle of Self-Doubt

Here’s where hypnotherapy comes in. Hypnotherapy is all about getting to the root of those deeply ingrained thoughts and beliefs—the ones that tell you you’re not enough. These thoughts live in your subconscious mind, which means you can’t just talk yourself out of them using logic. You need to shift them at a deeper level.

In Sarah’s case, we used Rapid Transformational Hypnotherapy to explore where these feelings of inadequacy were coming from. Through our sessions, she realised that much of her self-doubt stemmed from early experiences where she felt overlooked or compared to others, and ultimately feeling like she wasn’t enough.

Once we identified those memories, we could begin to reframe them. Instead of holding onto the belief that she was ‘less than’, Sarah started to internalise the truth: she had worked hard, she was talented, and she deserved her success.

After a few sessions, Sarah reported feeling more at ease in her roles. She wasn’t waiting for the other shoe to drop anymore. In fact, she was able to step into her performances with a new sense of ownership—she had earned her place on that stage, and she finally felt it fully in her body, heart and mind.

Confidence Through Visualisation and Reprogramming

One of the most powerful tools I use in hypnotherapy is Inner Visioning. As a performer, you know the importance of practice, but do you ever mentally rehearse success in a fully emotional, somatic, embodied and powerful way? Not just the notes, the lines, or the steps, but the feeling of owning the stage, being your true self and expressing who you really are?

With hypnotherapy, I use a unique technique that I call Inner Visioning to help you see, feel and experiencing yourself succeeding, thriving and soaring, but not in a "fake it till you make it" kind of way - no no no! That doesn’t work. Your logical mind just steps in and says “don’t be silly, you don’t really believe you’re good enough!”

This is all about reprogramming your subconscious to believe that success, confidence and self-belief is your natural state. If you can feel what it’s like to perform with confidence, your brain starts to accept that as the norm.

And when your brain believes it, imposter syndrome doesn’t stand a chance.

I recently worked with a very successful musician called James who used to feel crushed by the pressure of big performances. He played in bands with major pop stars. He would stand in front of an audience, and his hands would shake so badly, he thought he wouldn’t be able to play. Through hypnotherapy we got to the root cause of some traumatic experiences at his classical music conservatoire from many years ago where his self-esteem was eroded. We worked on processing those experiences and releasing them from his body and nervous system.

We then did the amazing Inner Visioning process, to create a state of calmness and control during these high-pressure moments. He started to see himself as the confident performer he truly was. Now, instead of focusing on what could go wrong, James walks on stage with a sense of peace and excitement for what’s ahead. He has found joy in making music again, even under intense pressure.

Rewriting Your Inner Script

In my experience working with performers from all over the world, I’ve found that many of them are stuck in an internal dialogue that’s hypercritical. The things they say to themselves are things they would never say to another person: “You’re not good enough,” “They’ll see through you,” “You don’t deserve this.” And yet, this voice runs in the background of every audition, every rehearsal, every performance.

Hypnotherapy helps quiet that voice. We work to create a new internal dialogue—one that’s supportive, empowering, and, most importantly, true. As one client Kluane said to me after her last session recently: “I feel like my inner voice is finally on my side.”

It’s this shift that helps performers not only overcome imposter syndrome but also step into their careers with joy and confidence.

Why You Deserve to Own Your Success

At the heart of it, imposter syndrome thrives on the belief that you’re not enough. But here’s the truth: you are enough. Your talent, your hard work, and your passion are real, and you deserve to enjoy the fruits of your labour. Hypnotherapy isn’t about changing who you are—it’s about helping you realise that who you are is already more than enough.

If you’ve been struggling with imposter syndrome and feel like it’s holding you back from embracing your success, hypnotherapy can help you break free. I’ve seen it time and time again in my own life and career and with the hundreds of performers I’ve worked with. You don’t have to carry that burden of self-doubt any longer… I am here to help!
